Nutrition Information on Dates

Introduced to California and Mexico back in the 1700s, there are more than 24 types of dates but the most commonly eaten are the Medjool and Deglet Noor. High in sugar and fiber and rich in taste and antioxidants, dates have been used medicinally to treat muscle weakness, abdominal pain and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Nutrition Facts

The USDA National Nutrient Database lists the following nutrient values: Medjool dates contain 66 calories each, 1.5 grams of fiber, 17 milligrams of potassium and 15 milligrams of calcium, 18 grams of carbohydrates and 16 grams of sugar. Deglet noor dates, about 1/4 in size, contain 1/2 gram of fiber, 20 calories, and 5 milligrams of sugar and carbohydrates.

Polyphenols

In a study published in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" in 2005 comparing the percentage of polyphenols in dried and fresh fruits, fresh dates were found to contain the highest level of polyphenols and dried, the highest in nutrients. Fruits high in polyphenols were found to be high in fiber and have the ability to prevent damage to the proteins, carbohydrates and lipids required for the proper functioning of the body.

Rich in Antioxidants

In another study published by Harold E. Miller, Ph.D. in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" in 2000, whole grain breakfast cereals, fruits and vegetables were examined for their antioxidant-ability in protecting the body against degenerative diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Oxidation damages the assimilation of nutrients, cells and metabolic processes necessary for maintaining health. Of the grains, vegetables and fruits examined, dates were found to have the highest antioxidant content.

Chinese Remedy

As part of a cultural history of using food to treat common illnesses, dates have been used to improve physical conditions such as stomachache, abdominal pain and anemia. Henry C. Lu cites in his book "Chinese System of Food Cures" that eating boiled dates, yams and fresh ginger is a natural remedy for digestive weakness.

Considerations

It's probably a good idea to limit or avoid eating this fruit due to its high sugar content, especially if you have blood sugar issues such as diabetes or a metabolic disorder.
