Top spin on a batted baseball causes the ball to sink. EFastball.com notes that topspin is not advantageous for hitters because it produces ground balls instead of line drives. However, in certain game situations, including hit-and-runs or to advance a runner, you might want to put some topspin on the ball.
Step 1
Track the ball and watch it all the way to the bat so you can aim for the top portion of the ball with your swing. Watch the ball until contact is made so you can follow the movement and make contact where you want.
Step 2
Hit the top half or top portion of the ball to create topspin. According to University of Illinois physics professor Alan Nathan, connecting with the top half of the ball will generate topspin and make the ball go down, which will lead to a ground ball. The farther to the top you hit the ball the more topspin generated and the more quickly it will go to the ground.
Step 3
Practice hitting the ball with topspin and tracking the ball to aim for the top half. Certain game situations may call for hitting the ball on the ground and with practice you can master the topspin swing. Some baseballs have different portions of it painted so you can aim your swing better.
