Celebrities such as Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons have marketed their own workouts, while other routines, such as Jazzercise and Pilates, have become famous based on their style and method.

Jane Fonda Workout

Jane Fonda is a movie actress who became famous from starring in numerous movies during the 1960s and '70s. According to IMDB, during the 1980s she created "Jane Fonda's Workout Book" along with numerous VHS videos featuring Fonda practicing aerobics. This started a huge workout craze in the United States where even fashion took a turn to feature leotards and headbands. Fonda's workouts are based on toning the core and working out every single muscle in the body in a high pace routine. DVDs of Fonda's latest workout routine are also up for sale.

Richard Simmons

Richard Simmons said he weighed 268 lbs. upon graduating high school. Before he moved to Los Angeles in 1973, Simmons lost weight by adapting a healthful lifestyle, diet and fitness routine. Simmons consulted doctors and nutritionists while developing a workout that could benefit the elderly and obese without judgement. In 1974, he opened SLIMMONS in Beverly Hills where he still teaches. Simmons became famous for his outgoing personality. He created more than 50 workout videos that have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. His workouts often include upbeat music with humorous overtones.

Jazzercise

Jazzercise began during the fitness craze of the 1980s, incorporating dance and aerobics. Classes are usually either 30 or 60 minutes long and were designed to improve strength, flexibility and endurance. Jazzercise also offers more specific routines for sculpting arms, core and buttocks or step classes which feature specific moves for a high intensity workout. Young people might benefit from a Jazzercise junior class while seniors can opt for a Jazzercise Lite class. Jazzercise has now also begun to incorporate yoga, Pilates and kickboxing into workout routines. Classes can be found across the country at gyms or trademark Jazzercise locations.

Pilates

Pilates was developed by Joseph A. Pilates in Germany to help war veterans rehabilitate. Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscle groups while incorporating repetitive movements in the limbs that require concentration of the mind and focus on breath work. Most of the exercises are done on a mat, while some use specific machines to tone muscle groups. Pilates classes can be found at workout gyms or private studios nationwide.
