How to Wear a Powerlifting Belt

Wear a powerlifting belt when performing deadlifts with heavy weights, or if you have a lower-back injury or weak stomach muscles. The belt helps remind you to keep your spine correctly positioned to reduce the stress on you lower back muscles while squatting or deadlifting. The belt does not help you with the lift or support your back, but it does support weak abdominal muscles during the lift. Wear the powerlifting belt correctly to avoid back injuries.

Step 1

Wrap the powerlifting belt around your waist. Position the belt right above your hips.

Step 2

Tighten the powerlifting belt until it fits snug around your waist. Make sure you can breathe normally while wearing the belt. Wearing the belt too tight can cause you to breathe incorrectly, leading to dizziness and blackouts.

Step 3

Try lifting some weights while wearing the belt. The belt should feel tighter as you perform a lift. Tighten the belt if you do not feel this sensation, but take care not to hinder your breathing.
