The ability to perform an effective chip shot helps to shave shots from your score when you are just off the green. Chip shots are short shots that require more feel and finesse than power, with the goal to leave yourself a short putt. If you can put a little backspin on your chip shots, you can prevent the ball from rolling too far past the hole, and increase your chances of making the putt.

Step 1

Assume a stance with the ball closer to your back foot, with your weight on your front foot.

Step 2

Grip down on the shaft of your club to help give you more control over your swing.

Step 3

Swing the club back with your arms and shoulders, keeping your wrists stiff.

Step 4

Accelerate slightly on your downswing, striking the ball as the club is descending. Allow the club face to lift the ball and create the backspin you want.

Tips and Warnings

  • Bring your club back as far as necessary to land the ball on the green. Keep your hands ahead of the ball at impact to help you hit down on the back of the ball.
