The ab belt is worn around the midsection to help tone your stomach. There are various models. Some are equipped with electronic features to stimulate abdominal muscles. According to the website Diets In Review.com, you can wear the ab belt every day during the first two months of use. After two months, you can decrease its use to three times a week. The effectiveness of the ab belt is questionable, and it shouldn't replace traditional methods of abdominal toning such as diet and exercise.

Types

Ab belts come with different features. Some are made out of elastic and polyester and are worn to help with a "sucking in" effect. These can be worn during regular cardiovascular exercise. More advanced versions of the ab belt are equipped with electronic devices that send pulses during use. The pulses stimulate muscle contraction throughout the abdominals. Some of these belts have a feature that lets you increase the intensity level as your muscles grow stronger.

Purported Benefits

Ab belt manufacturers promise users quick toning results from using their products. Reducing belly fat does decrease your chances of obesity-related diseases such as hypertension, heart diseases and diabetes. However, the ab belt doesn't directly reduce belly fat. The belt may help you define preexisting abdominal muscles, but you will not burn a significant number of extra calories with the belt, no matter how often you wear it. Therefore, it is imperative that you engage in regular cardiovascular exercise if you want to lose fat.

Recommendations

Belts with pulses come with instructions to wear them on a daily basis for one to two months, for 30-minute sessions at a time. The most dramatic results are promised during the first two months. As your abs become stronger, the manufacturers say it is important to keep using the ab belt to keep up with the results. If you notice any muscle discomfort from using the belt, reduce its usage to every other day. Under any circumstances, the belt shouldn't replace aerobic activity.

Considerations

One downside to the ab belt is that the device isn't customized to fit larger waistlines. So users must already be in relatively good shape for the belt to comfortably fit. Your best form of abdominal toning is through long-term efforts at exercise and a healthy diet. Despite the promises made by ab belt manufacturers and the sellers of other ab-specific toning gear, spot training isn't effective in taming belly fat. Strength training exercises should be combined with daily aerobic exercise for best results. You may use the ab belt as a way to define abdominal muscles, but you can't indulge in unhealthy habits.
