Making weight is a constant concern for wrestlers. Even a couple pounds can create an advantage for a wrestler, which is why wrestling matches are arranged according to weight classes. To maximize their strength and power in a match, wrestlers typically try to compete at the highest weight allowed by a given weight class. Many wrestlers toe the line prior to competition and are worried in the days leading up to a match that their weight may be slightly over the maximum limit. Fortunately, there are some safe methods you can use to trim weight prior to a match.
Step 1
Perform regular aerobic exercise. Your body can burn hundreds of calories in an hour, and these calories are obtained from the food in your system and the fat deposits stored on your body. Over time, you can lose several pounds that may help get you below the maximum weight for your wrestling match.
Step 2
Eat a reduced-calorie diet when trying to drop weight. As long as you are burning more calories than you bring in during a day, your body will slowly lose fat weight. The more time you have to lose weight prior to a wrestling match, the less drastic this calorie reduction needs to be in order to be effective. Concentrate on eating low-fat foods and complex carbohydrates. Such a diet should include lots of lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Step 3
Avoid eating or drinking large amounts of water just before weigh in. You don't want to dehydrate yourself -- in fact, you can get disqualified in some wrestling leagues if your body is too dehydrated -- but water and food weight can weigh you down and put you over your max weight. Eat small amounts and drink consistently but sparingly leading up to the weigh in.
Step 4
Go to the bathroom right before weigh in. It sounds simple, but the weight lost by going to the bathroom can make a difference when trying to get just under a weight limit. This is one of the most effective, short-term ways you can make sure you are at your maximum lowest weight.
