If your skin starts to itch when you are out for your afternoon run, you may be experiencing an allergic reaction to exercise. The condition known as exercise-induced urticaria is a common type of heat rash It is classified as a physical allergy. Symptoms may occur during or immediately following vigorous exercise. As long as no other symptoms accompany the hive-like reaction, the condition is not life threatening and should diminish within minutes after your run.

Urticaria Symptoms

In addition to the intense itching sensation, red splotches or blisters can appear on any part of the body. The symptoms of urticaria typically involve hive-like flat bumps on the skin that appear to be more red around the edge than in the middle. You may also experience flushing of the skin and swelling of the hands, face or tongue. If symptoms persist and include nausea, shortness of breath or a headache, you may have a more serious condition that requires medical attention.

Causes

The itchy reaction suddenly occurs when your body temperature rises and is normally a result of intense activity such as jogging or running. Exercising in intense heat can also exacerbate the condition because the stimuli that induces the allergic reaction is actually sweating. In some people, eating certain foods before exercising can also bring on the itchy reaction.

Prevention and Treatment

Stop exercising as soon as you notice the onset of hive-like symptoms. Try exercising in a cooler environment or get your cardio workout by swimming laps to avoid sweating. Pay close attention to what you eat right before you exercise, and take note of any patterns or hives that might be related to certain foods. In some cases your doctor may prescribe antihistamines.

Other Causes

Although exercise-induced urticaria is most likely the culprit behind the itching when you jog, there may be other causes. Dry skin can also cause itchy skin during exercise. Moisturize your skin as a preventative measure after you shower or right before you exercise. Some laundry detergents or even skin soaps can cause irritating skin rashes, but symptoms would be more general, and not necessarily induced by exercise. Talk to your doctor about your exercise-induced urticaria symptoms for specific advice regarding your case.
