Claritin-D is one of many medications that help to control allergy symptoms. This over-the-counter medication comes in two options: one for 12-hour relief and one for 24-hour relief. This medication is designed to clear up nasal congestion and sinus pressure. It claims to offer long-lasting relief without making you drowsy. It can help to manage symptoms, such as sneezing, cough, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, hives, skin rash and itching. Its main ingredient is loratadine, which can have side effects.
Less Serious Side Effects
Side effects from Claritin-D can include headaches, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, blurred vision, insomnia, skin rash or itching, feeling sleepy, difficulty concentrating, problems with memory and/or ringing in the ears. This medication can cause gastrointestinal side effects, including vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, abdominal pain and nausea. You may also feel anxious or restless and have a loss of appetite. Additional side effects can include nosebleed, thirst, sore throat and mouth sores.
Serious Side Effects
Contact your doctor if you have a racing heart rate, confusion, hallucinations, sweating, severe dizziness or drowsiness, chest pain, unusual weakness, uncontrolled shaking or tremors, fever, chills, body aches or flu symptoms. Other serious complications include changes in blood pressure, leg cramps, swelling of the legs and feet and urinating less than you normally do or not urinating at all. In some cases, this medication can lead to liver damage.
Overdose Side Effects
If you overdose on Claritin-D you may feel restless or nervous, nauseous, dizzy or drowsy. You may vomit, have stomach pain, dry mouth, warmth or tingly feeling in various areas of the body, or have a seizure or convulsions. If you have hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat or cannot swallow you may be having an allergic reaction and you need immediate medical attention.
