Heartburn is characterized by pain and a burning sensation that is felt in the chest behind the breastbone and possibly in the stomach. Approximately 40 percent of Americans experience heartburn at least once a month, according to The American College of Gastroenterology. Making changes to your diet regimen may help reduce the frequency of heartburn. Additionally, herbal teas such as peppermint tea may also help reduce heartburn symptoms. Speak with your doctor before using peppermint as an alternative remedy for heartburn.
Causes
Heartburn is the result of stomach acids backing up into the esophagus. Sometimes, the lower esophageal sphincter may relax or weaken abnormally, allowing stomach acids to flow back into the esophagus, leading to heartburn, according to MayoClinic.com. Gastrointestinal reflux disease, also referred to as GERD, may cause heartburn to develop.
Peppermint
The peppermint plant is a hybrid perennial plant that grows up to 3 feet tall and can be found in Europe and the eastern United States. Peppermint is used medicinally and as a popular flavoring agent for candy, toothpaste and other consumable products. Some common medicinal uses of peppermint include treatment of headaches, anxiety, diarrhea, flatulence and indigestion.
How It Works
Peppermint contains active ingredients such as volatile oils, terpene and menthol, which are believed to calm and relax the smooth muscles such as those in the stomach. In addition to calming smooth muscles, peppermint also improves the flow of bile, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. However, UMMC warns that peppermint should not be used if your heartburn or indigestion is related to GERD . Peppermint tea may be safe in large quantities; however, it is strongly recommended that you talk to your doctor to determine the appropriate dosage for your symptoms. To make an herbal tea using peppermint, steep 1 tsp. of dried peppermint herb to 1 cup of boiling water, strain and then drink. You may drink peppermint tea between meals up to four times per day.
Possible Side Effects
Peppermint may have certain side effects such as mouth sores, headaches and diarrhea. Women who may be pregnant or nursing should not use peppermint to treat heartburn or any other condition without speaking to their doctor. Peppermint may lead to skin irritations upon skin contact.
