Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body and is transported to different tissues and cells via blood. While low blood sugar levels can lead to fatigue and weakness, elevated levels of sugar or glucose in the blood can cause diabetes characterized by dehydration, frequent urination, blurry vision and kidney damage. Insufficient production of the hormone insulin by the pancreas or inability of the cells to respond to insulin is the main causes of the condition. Apart from diet, exercise and medications, certain herbs may help regulate blood sugar levels naturally.
Cinnamon
Oils and powders made from the bark of the cinnamon, or Cinnamomum zeylanicum tree consist of chemicals that may lower sugar levels. Hence, cinnamon may be used to supplement the regular diabetes treatment, says MayoClinic.com. Cinnamon is generally well tolerated, although allergic reactions and ulcers have been reported occasionally. Also, more research is needed to prove the efficacy of cinnamon to lower blood glucose levels. It is, therefore, important to talk to a doctor before using cinnamon supplements for hyperglycemia.
Turmeric
The University of Maryland Medical Center states that turmeric can reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels in animals. Turmeric supplements are obtained from the roots and underground stems of turmeric, or Curcuma longa plant, and are available in capsule, tablet, powder and fluid extract form. Turmeric is considered safe. However, prolonged use can lead to upset stomach and ulcers. It is also important to remember that the benefits of turmeric have not been demonstrated in actual clinical cases. Hence, use it only under the supervision of a doctor.
Fenugreek
A study published in the January 2009 edition of the "International Journal of Vitamin and Nutrition Research" indicates that intake of 10 g of fenugreek seed powder mixed with yogurt or soaked in hot water for eight weeks may help regulate blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes patients and can be used along with other medications to manage the condition. Gastric disturbances, allergic reactions and a maple syrup odor in urine are the common side effects. Always consult your doctor before using fenugreek.
American Ginseng
Products made from the roots of American ginseng, or Panax quinquefolius plant, according to UMMC, help lower blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes patients. However, more research is needed before American ginseng can be considered an alternative to existing diabetic medications. The herb is available in capsule, tablet and liquid extract form. Consult a doctor before using American ginseng as it may occasionally cause high blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety, diarrhea and vomiting.
Bilberry
Another herb called bilberry contains chemicals that can lower blood sugar levels, says MedlinePlus. The products are made from the dried, ripe fruit and leaves of the bilberry or Vaccinium myrtillus plant and are available in tea and liquid extract form. No major side effects of the herb have been documented. However, it is important to monitor the blood sugar levels while taking the herb. Your health care provider may be able to guide you about the proper use of bilberry.
