Hemorrhoids are caused when intense pressure is put on the veins in the anus, causing them to expand and swell due to the pressure. Hemorrhoids can develop inside the anus or protrude out from the opening of the anus. They are common during pregnancy and after giving birth, but the most common cause is straining during bowel movements. Painful bowel movements typically are caused by constipation, a condition that can be treated through dietary changes.
Constipation and Lack of Fluids
Constipation is a condition involving infrequent and painful bowel movements. When you are constipated, your stool is hard and dry, making it more difficult to pass. A significant amount of strain and time is needed to excrete hard stool. The main cause of hard stool is lack of fluid intake. The body needs at least eight glasses of fluids per day. Fluids are an important part of the digestive process and help to move digested food from the stomach to the intestines for removal from the body.
Fiber
Diets high in fiber alleviate constipation by producing softer stools that are easier to pass, but Americans typically eat less fiber than recommended on a daily basis. The average American consumes 15 g of fiber per day, but the American Dietetic Association recommends 25 g for women and 38 g for men. Whole grain and whole wheat breads and bran cereals are high in fiber, as are beans. Another way to increase your fiber intake is to add fiber supplements to your diet. Fiber supplements come in pill and powder forms and can be purchased over the counter.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables prevent constipation and subsequent hemorrhoids because they are good sources of both fluids and fiber. For example, a medium-size apple or pear or half cup of prunes have 3 to 4 g of fiber. Vegetables high in fiber include spinach, potatoes, green peas and cauliflower. Canned fruits or vegetables and drinks that contain 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice also can be added to your diet, but do so gradually. If you add too much fiber too fast, it can cause gas or stomach pains.
Probiotics
Probiotics are microorganisms that contain good bacteria and are used to promote health, prevent illness and treat diseases. They are available in foods as well as dietary supplements. Yogurt, fermented and unfermented milk and some soy beverages contain probiotics. Probiotics help the body to digest and absorb food and nutrients. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, probiotics, such as lactobacillus and bifidus, can be used to prevent and treat hemorrhoids.
