Post-surgery exercises can speed up your recovery and reduce pain and fluid retention. Your successful recovery from operations to replace your hip, fix your shoulder and fuse your spine depends on exercises prescribed by your doctor and your physical and occupational therapist. Research post-surgery exercises and always follow the plan designed for you by your health professional.

Shoulder Surgery

After shoulder surgery, your health professional may prescribe 10- to 15-minute exercise sessions, two or three times per day, to increase your strength and range of motion. Typical kinds of shoulder surgeries repair dislocations and rotator cuff tears. Follow the specifics of the routine provided by your doctor. Common rehabilitation exercises include internal shoulder rotations, shoulder flexion, shoulder abduction and isometric shoulder extensions while standing. Bend at the hips to do circular shoulder pendulum exercises. Take a seat to do isometric shoulder adduction and abduction.

Breast Surgery

Breast surgery -- such as a mastectomy or breast reconstruction -- can impair the function of your arm by decreasing strength and limiting range of motion. You may be able to perform certain exercises soon after surgery; wait to do more strenuous exercises until after your drains and stitches are removed. Start exercising your affected arm by using it as you normally would to bathe, eat and brush your hair. Do arm raises while lying down to reduce fluid buildup. Hand clenching, elbow bending and deep breathing activities are commonly recommended after breast surgery.

Spine Fusion

Post-surgery exercise is crucial in the successful recovery from spine fusion surgery. In this procedure used to relieve symptoms of various back conditions, including scoliosis and fractures, two vertebrae are fused together to form one. Wait for about 90 days after your surgery to begin exercising because that is the time required for the fusion to set up and mature. The rehabilitative process for spine fusion surgery typically includes exercises for stretching and strengthening muscles, as well as aerobic activity. Exercises that require movements such as bending, lifting and twisting are prohibited until your doctor grants you approval.

Total Hip Replacement

Use exercise to restore hip movement and strength after a hip-replacement surgery. During the early part of your recovery, your health-care provider may recommend 20 to 30 minutes of exercise two or three times per day. The exercises speed healing by increasing circulation to your legs and prevent blood clots. Lie on your back and relax as you do ankle pumps, ankle rotations, gentle knee bends and isometric glute contractions. Do not do exercises such as leg lifts without your doctor's approval.
