In an increasingly fast food nation, it's no wonder that the obesity rate has skyrocketed to nearly 30 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While advertisements for fad diets, pills and products abound, it almost seems too simple that the answer to an increasing obesity problem could be right in your own home. By taking control of your nutrition and cooking healthier meals, you could lose weight in a safe and natural way while promoting a healthier lifestyle for you and your family.

Fast Food Dangers

Busy lifestyles and growing responsibilities leave many people unable to cook healthy meals at home. Unfortunately, a dependence on fast food burgers, fries and soda is the very thing that could be leading to your weight problem. A 2005 study published in "The Lancet" found that fast food consumption leads to weight gain and insulin resistance, which are two causes of obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Simply making an effort to cook your own healthier foods can help you battle obesity by avoiding fried offerings, excess fat, salt and calories and knowing what you're putting into your body.

Getting Started

The idea of letting go of your fast food crutch can seem daunting at first, especially if you don;t usually cook your own foods. The easiest way to get started is to know that healthy meals start with healthy shopping. Head to the grocery store with a clear idea of the types of foods you want to feed your family. By shopping the perimeter of the store, you'll have access to whole foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy products and lean meats, all which can add up to healthier meals at home.

Meal Planning

Planning your meals ahead of time can help take some of the stress away from cooking your own meals for weight loss. By purchasing a calendar or planner, you can list what types of meals you'll eat each day. By having a clear plan and the right foods on hand, you'll be less likely to become tempted by unhealthy fast food or convenience food offerings. Instead of wondering "What's for dinner," you'll already know. Save more time by doing the prep work when you get home from the store; chop and dice vegetables and proportioned meats so it's easier to put together a healthy meal quickly.

Balanced Meals

Simply by switching from fast foods to home-cooked, healthy meals can drastically cut your calories, fat and sodium for a healthier diet. Knowing how to create healthy meals can help your weight loss progress. When choosing a meal to prepare, look for balance. A balanced meal has fiber, protein and complex carbohydrates. For instance, a boneless, skinless chicken breast with brown rice and steamed vegetables, or a salmon steak with salad and whole grain pasta. Choose high-quality meals made with healthy ingredients that are low in calories yet high in nutritive value.
