Which Exercises Can I Do With a Bulging C45?

The cervical spine -- also known as your neck -- is made up of seven vertebrae and six disks. The vertebrae are numbered from one to seven, running from the base of the skull to the top of the thoracic spine, whereas the disks are identified by the vertebrae between which they sit. So when talking about a bulging C45, it is in reference to the disk that separates the fourth and fifth vertebrae of your neck.

Identification

A bulging disk is characterized as a disk that has either changed position or form. It is often considered the second stage of herniation, in which a portion of the disk prolapses and begins to impinge into the spinal canal. In the cervical spine, it can lead to pain within the neck, shoulder blade and even arm.

Physical Activity

Those exercises considered suitable for a bulging C45 vary greatly from person to person, so it's best to consult with a doctor before you take part in any exercise program. That being said, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains that any physical activity that's "slow and controlled" is usually acceptable. This can include walking, biking, cross-country skiing and other low-impact athletic pursuits.

Exercise Restrictions

Depending on the severity of your injury, you may have to follow certain exercise restrictions until the disk has healed. Avoiding strenuous or high-impact activities is one of the more common admonitions, so you may need to stop playing tennis, racquetball, rugby, football, soccer and other similar activities. Lifting weights is usually out of the question as well.

Physical Therapy

While most people see an improvement in a bulging disk with rest, icing and other self-care treatments, your doctor may recommend physical therapy to improve your condition. In this situation, a physical therapist will establish an exercise program to meet your specific needs. This program usually consists of a series of stretches to increase the flexibility of the cervical spine.
