Allegra Side Effects & Enzymes

Allegra, generic name fexofenadine, is a prescription antihistamine manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis that's used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and hives. As an antihistamine, Allegra blocks the effects of histamine in the body. Histamine's effects in the body differ from person to person, but generally include minor itching, a runny nose, congestion and watery eyes. Severe histamine reactions can close the bronchial tubes, making breathing difficult. Histamine can also cause an outbreak of hives on your skin. As with most medications, Allegra can have side effects.

Allegra's side effects are uncommon, and most are not serious. However, some rare side effects associated with Allegra are serious and require immediate medical attention. Should you experience an adverse reaction to this drug, immediately discontinue use and contact a medical professional.

Rare Side Effects

According to Sanofi-Aventis prescribing data, the number of patients who experience Allegra's rare side effects is fewer than 1%. These rare side effects include tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, and difficult or labored breathing. Additionally, in rare cases, Allegra can cause swelling of your face, lips, tongue, eyelids, hands, legs, sex organs and feet. Most often, this swelling will resemble hives. In rare cases, it is also possible to experience sleeplessness, nightmares, and nervousness. If you experience any of these rare side effects after taking Allegra, immediately discontinue use and contact a medical professional.

Common Side Effects

The more common side effects associated with Allegra include headaches, nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, sneezing and sore throat. Generally, if you experience any of these common side effects, you do not need to seek medical attention. However, you should carefully monitor the side effect, and seek medical attention immediately should any problems worsen.

Drug Reactions

Allegra can also cause adverse reactions to other drugs, food or drinks. Inform your doctor of any medication you take, including herbal supplements, prior to starting Allegra. According to MayoClinic.com, drinking fruit juices such as apple, grapefruit or orange juice may increase Allegra's side effects or decrease its effectiveness.
