In most cases, roller hockey equipment and ice hockey equipment are interchangeable. Pieces like the shoulder pads, gloves, sticks and jerseys sold as ice hockey gear can double as roller hockey equipment as there is little difference between them. The most noticeably different piece of equipment between the two sports are the skates. If you want to get the pads labeled for the sport, there are ways you can go about telling the difference between the two.

Step 1

Inspect the gear to see if it is labeled as ice hockey or roller hockey equipment.

Step 2

Check the equipment's brand. Some companies such as Bauer, Easton and Flite Hockey manufacture equipment made specifically for ice hockey.

Step 3

Examine the material and construction of the equipment. Roller hockey pads will have some type of mesh ventilation since players do not have the ice to naturally cool them off during games and need extra heat ventilation.

Tips and Warnings

  • Roller hockey pucks often are made from plastic and are lighter than the rubber pucks used in ice hockey.
