There is little difference between the equipment used in ice and roller hockey, aside from the skates and puck. The pads themselves are virtually interchangeable and most leagues don't have any restrictions on using pads designed for one sport in the other. However, if you want to purchase or use the equipment as it was designed, there are ways you can tell the difference between ice and roller hockey pads.
Step 1
Check the store where you purchased the pads or look for the same model pads elsewhere to see if the equipment is labeled as ice hockey or roller hockey gear.
Step 2
Look at the manufacturer of the pads. Some companies, such as Bauer, CCM and Itech, manufacture pads specifically designed for ice hockey. Other companies make only roller and inline hockey equipment, while some make both.
Step 3
Inspect the way the pads are made. Ice hockey pads are usually a little more insulated than roller hockey pads. Roller hockey pads come with a mesh ventilation system that allows the players to cool off as they aren't playing on ice.
