Top round steak is a tender cut of beef from the inner thigh of a cow. This part of the meat is used to make a variety of dishes, including savory stir fries, stews and sandwiches. Steak, while rich in protein, is also higher in fat than other types of meat. However, top round sirloin can be prepared in a healthy manner to cut down on fat and grease.

Preparation

Eat no more than 6 oz. of meat a day if you are on a 2,000-calorie diet, recommends the American Heart Association. When you do eat top round steak, however, select a piece that has as little visible fat as possible. Lean cuts of meat, such as choice or prime, are also lower in fat and healthier for cooking than lower grades. Slice off what remaining portions of fat you can from the steak. Cooking meats the day before you plan to eat them can also help reduce fat. Whatever fat is left after cooking will harden when cooled in the refrigerator, allowing you to easily scrape it off the meat.

Broiling

Broil top round steak by placing it in a raised pan that has another pan underneath to catch the draining fat. The heat source from the oven is generally positioned over the meat. This arrangement helps the meat to stay moist, while fat trickles out through the bottom. Preheat the oven first before putting the steak inside. Broil the steak for about 15 minutes on one side, flip it over and cook the other side for 15 minutes.

Roasting

Roasting is a cooking technique in which the meat is cooked over an open flame or close to an oven's heat source. Roasting tends to crisp only the meat's skin, leaving the inside layers tender and juicy. You can also roast steak through the rotisserie method, in which the meat is slowly rotated above the heat source. To properly roast top round, set your oven to 450 degrees F and allow the meat to cook for approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Grilling

Grilling is also one of the healthiest ways to cook a top round steak. Like broiling, much of the fat drains off the meat during grilling. There's also be a psychological advantage to preparing your steak in this way. Grilling typically brings people outdoors. Eating in the open air can provide a great sense of enjoyment for friends and family. A top round cooks on the grill until it reaches an internal temperature of between 130 and 170 degrees F.
