Softball bats are sold in a variety of sizes, materials and styles. Choosing a softball bat is not done by simply picking one off of the shelf and purchasing it. A softball bat must fit your individual playing style with comfort and ease of use. When shopping for a softball bat, you also must know your league rules governing length, width and material to ensure you choose the right bat.
Step 1
Inspect bats of different materials, such as aluminum, graphite, titanium and wood. Aluminum bats are the most popular because of their durability and lightweight feel; however, graphite and titanium bats are proving to be even lighter than aluminum. Wood bats rarely are used in softball and are less durable, but they are ideal for players who play only periodically.
Step 2
Feel the weight of different bats in your hands as you stand in batting stance. While there are no league regulations on bat weights, you want to choose a bat that does not apply pressure to your wrists and is easy to swing. Lighter bats allow for speed, while heavier bats allow for hitting force. These factors are determined by your overall position and playing style. Bat weights range from 17 oz. to 27 oz., depending on material and shape.
Step 3
Read your league's rules and regulations to determine the length minimum and maximum allowable for your bat. Working within these guidelines, measure bats that you are interested in to make sure they conform to these regulations and provide comfort to you personally.
Step 4
Inspect the grip of all bats you look at. The grip is composed of a synthetic or leather covering at the base of your bat. It ensures that there is no slipping or rubbing of the bat against your hands. Any tearing or improper stitching is a warning sign that the grip of the bat is not well made.
Tips and Warnings
- Ask sporting goods retailers if there is a trial version of the bat you are interested in available. Some batting cages also have bats that you can use to determine the right make, size and weight for you.
