Endurance events such as the triathlon have a long history and require a dedicated training plan, which has resulted in various traditions developed over years of competition. Triathletes are commonly referred to as being obsessive-compulsive about their training, nutrition and pre-race routines. The athletes, however aren't the only ones with traditions -- the actual competitions follow traditions intended to enhance the race experience for the competitors and spectators.
Nutrition
Triathletes follow a systematic training schedule leading up to the triathlon and complement that training program with a dedicated nutrition plan to enhance performance. As the race approaches, triathletes commonly become more and more strict with their nutrition by eating only specific foods. For example, Chris McCormack, professional triathlete, eats lasagna before every race because his mother used to make it before soccer games when he was growing up.
Routine
The pre-race routine on the day of the race is a tradition for triathletes that prepares the mind and body for the upcoming competition. Olympic triathletes, for example, use a combination of visualization and movements to get in the right mindset and activate the neuromuscular system for the race. Sports psychologists theorize that pre-race routine and visualization lays the groundwork for focus throughout the race.
Expo
Large triathlons commonly feature an expo at the host hotel or conference area with a variety of vendors and seminars. The expo is an opportunity for the triathletes to purchase new product at discounted prices, receive free product samples, enter prize giveaways and listen to guest speakers. The Chicago Triathlon, for example, is associated with the Multisport and Fitness Expo, which featured 150 exhibitors and more than 200 booths at the time of publication.
Awards Ceremony
For some triathletes, the triathlon marks a significant accomplishment in their lives. As a result, a triathlon tradition is to celebrate the event along with the winners at a post-race awards ceremony. The awards ceremony commonly includes snacks and refreshments and provides an opportunity to meet the other competitors to discuss the race, training styles and upcoming events. The actual awards presentation includes the overall winners along with the top competitors in each age group.
