If your daughter is overweight, you don't have to put a lock on the refrigerator. Instead, teach your child the correlation between a slim, toned body and a healthy diet and exercise program. Together, you and your daughter will find a routine that helps her lose weight and keep the weight off for good. Talk to your child's doctor before she starts a new diet and exercise program, particularly if your daughter has injuries, allergies or other health conditions.

Step 1

Make the changes with your daughter. Don't dictate a new diet and exercise plan to your child, then expect her to watch as you eat her favorite foods. Instead, make permanent changes in your household, like eating around the dinner table every night instead of getting takeout or fast food.

Step 2

Teach your child the difference between nutritious foods and empty calories. Sodas and sugary snacks, for example, are loaded with empty calories, while fresh fruits and vegetables are filling snacks that are nutritious and low in calories. Encourage your daughter to substitute water or seltzer for soda.

Step 3

Encourage your daughter to invite friends outside to run and play, rather than sitting inside and watching TV or playing video games. If your daughter is allowed to walk to school, encourage her to walk with her friends so that they can get some morning exercise together.

Step 4

Educate your child about the difference between fad diets and healthy eating habits. Fad diets are quick weight loss programs that involve eating very low-calorie foods for short periods of time to lose weight. Fad diets don't provide sustainable weight loss, because the weight will return when your child starts eating regularly again. Fad diets are dangerous because they lack the nutrients and vitamins your child needs.

Step 5

Use the weekend as an opportunity to be active as a family. Instead of sitting around the house watching movies on Saturday afternoon, go for a family hiking trip or have a family softball tournament. You'll bond with your daughter and burn calories at the same time.

Tips and Warnings

  • Encourage your daughter to wear comfortable clothing and supportive footwear when she exercises.
  • Consult a doctor immediately if you think your daughter may have an eating disorder.
