Questran, classified as a bile sequestrant or resin, effectively treats high cholesterol levels in those who have not responded to diet changes and statin medications alone. Adding Questran to a cholesterol-lowering regimen, with physician guidance, helps lower LDL cholesterol. Questran does have side effects that might require special attention before and during use. Establishing baseline blood tests, including liver enzymes and cholesterol levels, especially triglycerides, as well as monitoring throughout therapy, can minimize effects.
Questran
Also known as cholestyramine, Questran treats elevated LDL and total cholesterol levels. Questran attracts and blends with bile acids in the intestine to form a compound that is eliminated in excreted stool. This reduction of bile acids triggers the liver to manufacture more bile acids from cholesterol. The result helps decrease the amount of bile acids available for reabsorption in the liver, decreasing LDL and total cholesterol. Infrequently, Questran causes an increase in liver enzymes, especially in those with an underlying liver disorder, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Questran Side Effects
The most common Questran side effect is constipation, which could cause a degree of noncompliance among some users. Constipation can be alleviated, under medical supervision, by decreasing the dose of Questran or by adding a laxative. Other common side effects include abdominal distention, loose bowel movements, gas and vomiting. The use of Questran might cause a decrease in intestinal absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamin deficiencies of A, K, E and D might require supplementation. Consult your physician before starting any laxative or vitamin supplement while on Questran.
Questran Administration
Questran is available as a powder in cans or packets and is mixed, according to the prescribed dose, with juice, milk or water. One scoop or one packet holds 4 g of Questran. A diet high in fiber and fluids might help prevent constipation while on Questran treatment. Avoid taking the powder dry as this might cause harm to the esophagus as well as increase the risk of severe constipation.
Precautions
The use of Questran affects the absorption of a number of medications such as thyroid medication, blood thinners, medication to lower blood sugar and heart medications. It can increase the risk of osteoporosis by altering calcium levels. Taking medications 1 hour before Questran or 4 to 6 hours after can help avoid problems with absorption of medications. Those with severe cardiac disease, who already have problems with constipation, can worsen symptoms such as chest pain with Questran use.
