Jogging and running are not the same thing. Jogging is essentially very slow running. Dianne Hales, the author of the textbook "An Invitation to Health," doesn't pinpoint the speed of jogging and the speed of running because every individual is different, but she writes that joggers should be able to talk to other people. "Calories Burned Per Hour," a state of Wisconsin study, reports that the average person running 12-minute miles burns more calories than the average jogger so the average jogger's speed is less than 5 mph.

Calories Per Hour

You lose 1 lb. when you burn 3,500 more calories than you eat. A 190-lb. person burns 604 calories per hour jogging and 690 calories per hour running 5 mph, according to the Wisconsin study. A 155-lb. person drops 493 calories per hour jogging and 563 calories per hour running 5 mph. A 130-lb. person drops 413 calories per hour jogging and 472 calories per hour running 5 mph.

Calories Per Mile

The difference in calories burned between a jogger and someone who runs 5 mph is roughly the same as the difference in calories burned between someone who runs 5 mph, or 12-minute miles, and someone who runs 5.2 mph, or 11.5-minute miles. Consequently, an average 190-lb. person burning 604 calories per hour jogging is jogging about 4.8 mph and is burning about 126 calories per mile. The average 155-lb. person burning 493 calories while jogging 4.8 miles is burning 103 calories per mile, and the average 130-lb. person burning 413 calories while jogging 4.8 miles is burning 86 calories per mile.

Significance

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends three to five aerobic workouts per week to improve your fitness and recommends that each workout be 20 to 60 minutes. Continuous exercises such as jogging, bicycling and walking are aerobic exercises. If you jog three hours or 14.4 miles per week, you will burn 1,812 calories per week if you're 190 lb., or about 1/2 lb. weekly. You will burn about 1,479 calories, or about 2/5 lb., weekly if you weigh 155 lb. and 1,239 calories, or about 1/3 lb., weekly if you weigh 130 lb.

Comparisons

Jogging burns more calories than walking. Walking 4 mph, a "very brisk pace," according to the Wisconsin study, burns 345 calories per hour if you're 190 lb., 281 calories per hour if you're 155 lb. and 236 calories per hour if you're 130 lb. Running fast burns far more calories than jogging. Running eight-minute miles, or 7.5 mph, burns 1,078 calories per hour if you weigh 190 lb., 880 calories per hour if you weigh 155 lb. and 738 calories per hour if you weigh 130 lb.
