An effective shooter is able to perform each type of basketball shot well. A jump shot is useful when you need to shoot over a defender. A set shot is the most effective way to shoot accurate foul shots. A lay-up is an important shot to develop because it makes you a competent player close to the net. Dunking works well when you want to make sure you the ball goes in, although not all players have the ability to jump high enough to dunk. Practice each type of basketball shot often to develop your skills.
Step 1
Start your shooting practice by concentrating on your form. For each shot, square your shoulders and point both feet toward the net. Shoot the ball by extending the elbow of your shooting arm while your other hand acts as a guide to keep the ball on target. Complete your shot by snapping your wrist to add backspin and follow through with your shooting hand in line with the target.
Step 2
Add leg power to your shot by performing a slight jump during your shot. As you raise the ball over your head to shoot, bend your legs. When you launch the ball forward, perform a slight hop to add distance to the jump shot.
Step 3
Practice perimeter shooting after your form is well developed. Take shots from close range at first but move outward as your accuracy and power improve. The goal is to increase your shooting options by becoming an effective shooter from three-point range, which is the area outside the large semicircle on a standard court.
Step 4
Perform many set shots from the foul line to develop an effective foul shot. A set shot is a jump shot without the jump. Focus on executing consistent and accurate shots to increase your ability to shoot under pressure in a real game.
Step 5
Improve your close-range shooting by performing many lay-ups. A lay-up is a shot taken near the net that bounces off the backboard before dropping in. Develop an ability to shoot lay-ups with either hand to increase your effectiveness.
Step 6
Develop your dunking ability by practicing high vertical jumps. Not everyone has the height or jumping ability to perform dunks, but if you do, practice dunking often to get a feel for how close to the net you need to be to perform a successful dunk.
Tips and Warnings
- Add arc to your shot to improve your chances of success. A high-arcing shot is more likely to drop through the net. Ask a friend to feed you passes so you can practice quick shooting. During a game, defenders will swarm as soon as you get the ball, so it's important to be able to aim and shoot before they reach you. However, don't shoot so rapidly that you compromise proper form.
