Crutches are given to patients following surgeries on the leg -- including foot, ankle, knee and hip surgeries -- after which patients are not permitted to bear weight on their leg for a period of time indicated by their surgeon. Not bearing weight following surgery helps to reduce pain and swelling. Crutches can decrease the risk of postoperative infections or ripping of surgical incisions. Prior to your surgery, your surgeon may request that you attend a physical therapy session on walking with crutches.

Step 1

Adjust your crutches to the appropriate height. Stand with your back straight. Position the crutches underneath your arms. The top of the crutches should be positioned 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches below your armpits. Position your hands on the handgrips and adjust them until your elbows are positioned at 30-degree angles.

Step 2

Position your crutches about 1 foot in front of your feet. The crutches should be positioned 12 inches from the sides of your body as well. Lean slightly forward.

Step 3

Swing your body weight forward, placing the weight of your body on your handgrips. Land with your unaffected foot positioned between the crutches.

Step 4

Repeat. Lean forward and always place your crutches ahead of you while you walk. Keep your eyes focused ahead of you. Avoid looking at the ground and your foot movements.
