The jump set is a beneficial and crucial skill for the setter on a volleyball team. A standard set allows you to pass the ball and set up your teammate for an attack shot, making it difficult for the opposing team to return the ball. The jump set is done the same way, except as the setter, you will jump before setting the ball. This change in form can confuse your opponents into thinking you may spike the ball, which makes it more challenging for them to anticipate your defensive moves.

Step 1

Stand close to the net with your feet shoulder-width to hip-width apart. Your side should be facing the net with your body facing the inside of the court. Move the foot that is closest to the net a little farther forward than your back foot. This helps position your knees, hips and shoulders in the appropriate places.

Step 2

Place your hands level with your forehead. Bend your arms between a 45- and 90-degree angle to ready yourself for the set. Fan out all your fingers and keep them firm.

Step 3

Bend your knees and propel yourself upward toward the ball. Receive the ball when you are at the peak of your jump. The ball should be at forehead level.

Step 4

Receive the ball with just your fingertips. Touch the ball with all your fingers for the most control and stabilization. Release the ball quickly to avoid catching the ball, which is not allowed in volleyball.

Step 5

Follow through as you release the volleyball. Extend your arms toward the area you want your teammate to receive the ball. Continue your follow-through until your arms are completely straight to control the destination.

Step 6

Practice this skill. Have someone pass the ball to you over and over so you can practice the jump set in a controlled environment. Practice with your team to hone your skill in a game-style setting where your teammates can learn to work with your jump set.
