Replacing the brake pad on your Rollerblade, or inline, skates is an essential part of the maintenance routine. A pad that wears down can damage the brake assembly and become a hazard. There are four different styles of brakes available, but replacing the pad is the same for each. Changing out the pad takes just a few minutes and requires only a screwdriver.

Step 1

Turn the skate over so the pad faces up and front.

Step 2

Remove the center screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Place the head of the screwdriver into the center of the screw and turn it counterclockwise until it comes free.

Step 3

Pull the edge of the pad upward to remove it from the brake assembly.

Step 4

Flip the skate over and tap it on a table to remove the washer if it did not come out with the screw.

Step 5

Insert the new pad into the open space on the brake assembly. The rounded edge faces downward when inserting the pad. The flat edge should face up.

Step 6

Place the screw in the center of the washer and slide both pieces into the hole in the center of the new pad.

Step 7

Slide the screwdriver into the screw head and turn it clockwise until it is tight.

Step 8

Pull on the edge of the pad to ensure it is tight in the brake assembly. If the moves, tighten the screw again until the pad is stable. Repeat the process on the other skate.

Tips and Warnings

  • You may need to remove the assembly if you have trouble getting the pad off the bracket. Use an Allen key to remove the axle of the wheel in front of the brake. Insert the key into the bolt head in the axle and turn it counterclockwise until the bolt comes out. Push the axle out with the key and pull up on the wheel to remove it. Apply pressure to the brake bracket to pull it off the skate, then follow the steps to remove the pad.
