Trichomoniasis is the most common curable sexually transmitted disease in sexually active young women. Both men and women can become infected with trichomoniasis, which is caused by a single-cell protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Women, however, tend to be more symptomatic than men. Infected women commonly suffer from vaginal itching and irritation and experience a yellowish-green vaginal discharge with a strong, foul odor. Infected men usually experience only mild symptoms, including mild burning after urination or ejaculation and a small amount of discharge from the urethra. Consult your physician prior to treating trichomoniasis or any other health condition with herbal remedies.
Step 1
Take 400 mg of milk thistle every eight hours. Milk thistle contains silymarin, which is beneficial in reducing the reproduction of Trichomonas vaginalis, allowing your body's own immune system to better fight the infection. Milk thistle is available in capsule and tincture form, both of which are suitable to use.
Step 2
Administer a 500 mg garlic capsule or tablet each day. Allicin is a compound naturally occurring in garlic. Allicin has antibacterial and anti-protozoal properties. Take the garlic supplement at the same time each day to maintain steady levels of it in your system.
Step 3
Take 200 mg of echinacea every six hours. Echinacea boosts the immune system, empowering your body's defenses to better fight the trichomoniasis infection.
Step 4
Make a doctor's appointment. Follow up with your physician after seven days of treatment. Men without symptoms must be retested for trichomoniasis to ensure that the infection has been cured. Antibiotics may be necessary if symptoms persist for men or women or a man tests positive for trichomoniasis at the follow-up appointment.
Tips and Warnings
- Since sexual partners can spread trichomoniasis among each other, it is essential that both partners are simultaneously treated for trichomoniasis to prevent reinfection.
