Hepatitis C is one of the more serious hepatitis viruses that you can get. MayoClinic.com states that hepatitis C is passed from person to person via contaminated blood. Sexual contact, shared needles, childbirth and blood transfusions received before 1992 are among the most common methods of hepatitis C virus transmission. Natural remedies are commonly used in treating hepatitis C, but you should always discuss the safety and effectiveness of these treatments with your physician beforehand.

Hepatitis C Background

Hepatitis C is a liver disease that involves liver inflammation and liver dysfunction. According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus, and it can be passed from one person to the next. Hepatitis C is more likely to occur in people who were born to a mother infected with hepatitis C, people who have used illicit injection drugs and people who have had multiple sex partners within the last six months.

Helpful Herbal Remedies

Many herbal remedies have traditionally been used in treating hepatitis C, although research evidence showing their true effectiveness may currently be lacking. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine reports that several of these herbs are currently being studied for their ability to treat hepatitis C, including milk thistle, ginseng, licorice root, schisandra and oxymatrine, which is an extract from the sophora root. The center notes that no complementary alternative therapy, including herbs, has been scientifically proven to successfully combat this health problem.

A Commonly Used Botanical

Schisandra may be one of the most commonly used botanical medicines in treating hepatitis C. Schisandra, notes herbalist Ed Smith, author of "Therapeutic Herb Manual," helps support healthy liver function and treats hepatitis, or liver inflammation. Schisandra -- which possesses antioxidant, astringent and anti-tussive action -- protects your liver and helps your liver cells regenerate. Schisandra has also historically been used in treating gastrointestinal inflammation, night sweats and prolonged diarrhea.

Considerations

Hepatitis C is a health condition that should always be managed by a licensed health care practitioner. A qualified health care professional -- such as a naturopathic physician, registered dietitian or medical doctor trained in clinical nutrition -- can explain the role of herbal remedies and other dietary measures in the treatment of your condition. Review relevant treatment information -- dosage, drug interactions and side effects -- with your health care provider before using natural substances to help treat your condition.
