While novice skateboarders often prefer to keep their wheels on the ground, more experienced riders can execute aerial maneuvers over obstacles including barrels, benches and trashcans. According to Transworld Skateboarding, professional skateboarders often compete in high ollie contests to see who can jump over the highest obstacle on flat ground. When jumping over a barrel on your skateboard for the first time, use a small inclined ramp to aid in the learning process. Wear a protective helmet when practicing the barrel jumping technique.
Step 1
Transport the kicker and barrel to a low-traffic area. Place the barrel vertically about three feet in front of the ramp. Walk 20 to 30 feet away from the setup.
Step 2
Grip the nose of the skateboard in your non-dominant hand. Jog towards the ramp before dropping your skateboard onto the ground. Jump onto the top of the skateboard as it begins to roll forward.
Step 3
Align your front foot towards the middle of the board and your back foot on the tail. Push off the ground to increase your momentum. Lean on your heels or toes to steer the board toward the kicker.
Step 4
Bend your knees as the board begins to ascend the inclined face of the kicker. Push down with your back foot as you reach the apex of the kicker. Jump vertically to soar over the barrel.
Step 5
Slide your front foot forward to keep the board parallel with the ground. Bend your knees as the wheels descend onto the ground. Practice the barrel jump until you can land the maneuver consistently.
