Pilates is a form of exercise that incorporates calisthenic exercises designed to improve muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. It is a popular exercise method for many athletes and dancers who want to improve their muscular health without adding excess bulk. A regular exercise routine that includes Pilates can play a significant role in helping individuals burn calories and lose weight.

Pilates

Pilates is a type of strength-training exercise that uses a series of low-impact movements that mainly focus on the hips, thighs, abdominals and lower back muscles. Started in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates, this workout routine resembles the movements used in performing situps and pushups. While some routines incorporate specialized equipment, most Pilates exercises require nothing more than a floor mat and comfortable clothing.

The Role of Calories

Calories are measurements of energy. Your body consumes calories in the form of food and stores calories in the form of glucose and fat. Excess calories result in excess weight, while a calorie deficit leads to weight loss. Both diet and exercise can help you lose weight by reducing the amount of calories your body stores. Each pound of body fat equals around 3,500 calories.

Burning Calories

Like with all exercises, the intensity of your exercise along with your body weight contribute to the amount of calories you burn during a Pilates workout. Beginner routines burn fewer calories than advanced routines. For example, an average-sized woman who completes 50 minutes of Pilates at the beginner level tends to burn around 175 calories, while the same individual may burn closer to 375 calories during an advanced routine. These burned calories can add up to significant weight loss over time. Including 50 minutes of Pilates every day can result in a weight loss average of about 2 to 3 lbs. per month.

Other Benefits

In addition to helping you lose excess fat stores, Pilates can help increase your flexibility, helping you reduce the risk of muscle and join injuries. Depending on your specific workout routine, you can focus your efforts on toning specific areas of your body, such as your abdominal muscles, buttocks, thighs and arms. Pilates can also help improve your posture, giving you the appearance of added height and confidence.
