5-HTP is a chemical that the body can make naturally from an amino acid called tryptophan. 5-HTP is converted to another chemical called serotonin, which is responsible for regulating mood and behavior. People who suffer from depression may be prescribed an SSRI antidepressant drug, which is designed to increase the brain's reception to serotonin. It is not recommended to combine 5-HTP with SSRI drugs, as they are known to contraindicate each other. Do not mix 5-HTP supplements with SSRI drugs without physician supervision.

Step 1

Talk to your doctor. Do not attempt to take 5-HTP and SSRI drugs at the same time without first discussing the situation with your doctor. Be sure that he is aware of what you are doing and have him explain the possible side effects. Understand the risks involved.

Step 2

Pay close attention to any symptoms you experience if you mix 5-HTP with SSRI drugs. Known side effects of SSRI prescription drugs include nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, anxiety or irritability, problems sleeping, drowsiness, loss of sexual desire, headaches, dizziness and weight gain. These symptoms are expected to be amplified if 5-HTP is taken during SSRI use. Contact a physician immediately if any symptoms arise.

Step 3

Take 5-HTP and SSRI drugs at least three to four hours apart. Since SSRI drugs are designed to increase the brain's reception to serotonin, which is created from 5-HTP in the brain, taking the supplement at the opposite time of day from the SSRI drugs may decrease the severity of adverse reactions and amplified symptoms. 5-HTP and SSRI drugs contraindicate each other, and taking them together is not recommended. Have a physician approve their use and give detailed instructions on how to take them.

Step 4

Use the recommended or approved dosage given by your physician. If your physician approved the use of 5-HTP and SSRI drugs, follow the recommended dose amounts. Do not change or increase the dose of either substance in any way, unless instructed to do so by your physician. If more is desired, consult a physician first.
