Stationary bikes come in several different fits and skill levels to meet your cycling needs. Amateur and professional bicyclists ride stationary bikes to reach a maximum workout or to train for competition. Stationary bikes are belt-driven and have a number of special features and capabilities making the selection of the right one a unique task.
History
When American cyclist Johnny Goldberg crashed his bike one night while training for the 3,000 mile Race Across America, he decided to recreate the training conditions indoors. He developed an indoor cycling class training program, designed an indoor bike based on his road bike and took it to gyms around the world. The indoor cycling bike has become extremely popular with thousands of indoor cycling classes worldwide. This way the cyclist can get the same workout as he would on the road without weather being a factor.
Frame
An indoor cycling bike frame has heavy reinforced steel, designed to be movable so that the bike can be stored alongside or spread out over an area such as the gym floor. The bike's resistance allows the rider to stand up and put additional power on the pedals. Just as a rider can adjust the position of the bike seat and handlebar in several ways on a road bike, an indoor cycling bike allows the rider to adapt the positions of the seat and handlebar to produce extra power.
Flywheel
The flywheel is the critical component of an indoor cycling bike. If a rider chooses one with a weighted flywheel she will have a better ride than with other types of bikes. She can adjust the intensity and tension of a program by either a knob or a lever that controls tension to the weighted flywheel. Depending on the bike, the flywheel can weigh 20 to 50 lbs.
Indoor Cycling Bikes
The stationary bike should meet the personal needs of its riders. Some models are specifically designed for triathletes and cyclists who want to reach an increased performance level, while other stationary bikes are designed for the entry level rider looking to experience with indoor cycling for the first time. Many stationary bikes also come with features including the latest screen technology and software programs, giving riders the ability to watch and experience an interactive training workout.
