Celexa is the trade name for citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI, that is used to treat depression. SSRIs increase the amount of serotonin in the brain, thereby reducing feelings of depression and anxiety in many people. Celexa improves appetite and leads to weight gain in some people who suffered from loss of appetite and weight loss as a symptom of depression. This is a known side effect and is not cause for concern as long as you eat nutritious foods and maintain a healthy body weight.
Consult your physician prior to taking Celexa or any other medication.
Step 1
Take your Celexa at the same time each day to ensure that a stable amount of the medication is in your system. Celexa can be administered at any time of day, but you may wish to take your Celexa at night because it can cause drowsiness. If you forget a dose of Celexa, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you forgot and take your next scheduled dose.
Step 2
Increase your caloric intake to aid in weight gain. To gain 1/2 lb. per week, you must consume 250 calories more than your body burns each day. Incorporate nutrient-dense, high-calorie foods into your diet. For example, you may choose to dress your salad with olive oil and vinegar, enjoy a sliced avocado on your sandwiches and snack on whole-wheat crackers with cheese.
Step 3
Weigh yourself monthly to monitor your weight gain, aiming to gain 1 to 2 lbs. per month. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning prior to eating or drinking. Wear the same type of clothes each time you weigh yourself. These measures will ensure that you measure your weight gain as accurately as reasonably possible.
Step 4
Follow up with your physician if you struggle to gain weight. Celexa results in decreased appetite for some people, increasing the difficulty of gaining weight. If you suffer from this side effect, your physician may determine that a different antidepressant is more suitable for you. Consult a dietitian for additional assistance if you and your doctor decide that Celexa is best for you despite your weight-gain efforts.
