While certain skateboarders practice flipping their board through the air, others focus on a difficult spinning technique. Professional skaters utilize large ramps to execute 720- and 900-degree spins. When first learning the spinning technique, start with the most basic maneuver known as a 180. According to Transworld Skateboarding, advanced riders often combine the 180 with other tricks to create new variations. After getting comfortable with spinning the 180 on flat ground, try the maneuver over an obstacle or off the side of a kicker ramp.
Step 1
Place the skateboard on a smoothly paved driveway or parking lot. Rotate the board until the nose points in the direction you want to roll. Lower your dominant foot over the front four bolts of the skateboard setup.
Step 2
Increase your forward momentum by pushing off the ground with your nondominant foot. Lift your pushing shoe onto the back end of the board as you build to an adequate speed. Slide your lead shoe backward to rest near the middle of the board.
Step 3
Bend your knees slightly to maintain a balanced riding stance. Apply downward pressure with your back foot until the tail of the skateboard makes contact with the ground. Rotate your shoulders toward the left or right to begin the 180 maneuver.
Step 4
Jump vertically to allow the wheels of the skateboard to ascend off the ground. Slide your lead foot forward to level out the skateboard in the air. Allow the board to rotate 180 degrees as you reach the peak of your aerial jump.
Step 5
Lower your eyes to the ground as you begin to lose altitude. Bend your knees as the wheels land on the ground simultaneously. Practice the 180 on level ground until you get comfortable with the technique.
