Measuring your child's hand can get you started on finding the right sized cycling gloves. Wearing gloves while on a bike is a precaution that helps improve traction on the handlebars while riding. Gloves will also protect the skin if the child falls off the bike. Sizes may vary by manufacturer. Once you have a starting point, have your child try the gloves on before purchasing them to get the perfect fit.

Step 1

Wrap a cloth tape measuring around the hand to measure the circumference. Use the widest point of the hand. This would be the area that extends over the knuckles. Measure the dominant hand. For example, if you child is right-handed, use that hand for the measurement.

Step 2

Stretch the tape vertically across the back of the hand. Start at the top of the wrist. Pull the tape up over the hand and mark the spot on the tape at the tip of the middle or longest finger.

Step 3

Write the numbers down and take them with your to the store. Each manufacturer will have a different sizing chart that will be based on the hand measurement. Compare the circumference and length of the hand to the chart to find the correct size.

Step 4

Try both gloves on your child to see how they fit and ensure they are comfortable.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some charts may use age as the scale for size. Gloves with a reflective material will offer additional safety while your child rides the bike. The reflective edges will catch the light and draw attention of drivers.
