While advanced riders can boost high-flying grabs and spins above the ramp, beginning skateboarders often perform tricks on the top lip of the ramp. As opposed to a large half pipe, professional skateboarder Brian Sumner recommends learning the nose stall on a compact mini ramp. The nose stall and tail drop are essential maneuvers as they allow the rider to drop into the ramp to gain speed. Add flips and variations to the nose stall and tail drop to increase your bag of tricks.
Step 1
Place the skateboard onto the flat bottom of a mini ramp. Align your shoes on top of the board about shoulder-length apart. Thrust off the ramp with your back shoe to increase your forward momentum.
Step 2
Bend your knees as you ascend the wall of the mini ramp. Allow yourself to roll backward down the ramp. Extend your legs as you roll across the flat bottom to maintain speed.
Step 3
Repeat the ramp pumping process until you have enough speed to reach the top lip of the ramp, known as the coping. Align your front foot onto the nose of the skateboard as you ascend the ramp. Push down on the nose as your front wheels reach the base of the coping.
Step 4
Repeat the process until your back wheels lift off the ramp and the nose sits flat against the coping. Lean back to drop in to the ramp and complete the nose stall. Turn your head as you begin to roll backward.
Step 5
Slide your back foot onto the tail of the skateboard as you begin to ascend the opposing ramp wall. Push down on the tail as your rear wheels reach the base of the coping. Stall momentarily before leaning forward and dropping back into the ramp.
