The setter on the volleyball team is the catalyst for the offense. Setters need to develop the ability to get in position to set the ball accurately to the hitter and locate where the defense and blockers are at all times. Incorporating these beginning volleyball setting drills into practice helps the setter develop the skills necessary to play the position.
Set to Box
Have a teammate stand on a box, holding her hands as high as where an attacker would be hitting the ball. The coach or another teammate tosses the setter the ball to set to the teammate standing on the box. As she gets more consistent with accuracy, have her set the ball off her teammate's passes.
Watch the Players
This drill trains the setter to watch the defense, using her peripheral vision to decide where she sets the ball. Have players on one side of the net continually moving while the coach tosses her balls to set. She will have to set to the middle, back or side, depending on where the defense is on the other side of the net.
Blocker Movement
Setters need to learn to see the blocker's movement before they set the ball. The coach tosses her the ball from the back of the court. Just before the ball reaches the setter, the blocker on the other side of the net chooses to either take a step to the right or left. The setter has to concentrate and watch the blocker to set the ball in the opposite direction of the blocker's movement.
Concentration Drill
Divide the squad into two teams and have the setter go back and forth under the net to set for both teams. The coach starts the drill by throwing in a free ball. The ball is passed to the setter and the setter runs the play, then quickly goes to the other team to set. This drill allows the setter to concentrate and work on getting into the correct setting position.
