There's no excuse to not be in great shape while you're in your 20s. Just because you are now 27 does not mean it is inevitable that you will be overweight or that it is too late to start losing weight. The reason a lot of people start to pack on pounds in their late 20s has more to do with lifestyle choices than the calendar. It is true that your metabolism will drop as you get older, but only by about 2 percent every decade. In other words, there's nothing magical about turning 27 that will suddenly make it impossible for you to lose weight.

Step 1

Spend less time at the bar. People in their 20s spend a lot of time drinking in bars. Alcohol is nothing but empty calories, which will pack on the pounds quickly. It doesn't matter if you drink beer, liquor or wine; it's all empty calories. Adding mixers, like soda and tonic water, to your drinks only increases the amount of empty calories. By cutting down your trips to the local pub, you'll be likely to drink less.

Step 2

Change your diet and eating habits. It's common sense these days that to lose weight you must eat healthy, but losing weight isn't just about what you eat; it's also about when you eat. You need to eat four to five small, healthy meals per day to lose weight. Avoid late night binges and fast-food joints. Eating healthy all week can be ruined by a late-night pizza binge on Saturday night. College students also have a tendency to eat with no regularity, skipping meals in between classes, then overeating later in the day. Always keep a healthy snack on you, like a piece of fruit or some mixed nuts.

Step 3

Start a regular exercise routine. Perform 30 to 45 minutes of high-intensity aerobics three days a week. Lifting weights can also help you lose weight because building muscle increases your metabolism.

Step 4

Get a good night's sleep. Sleeping irregularly or not enough throws your body out of whack. Your body repairs itself during the time you sleep and also burns a lot of calories during that time. Pulling all-nighters or only getting a few hours of rest before you go in to work is one of the most destructive things you can do to yourself when trying to get into shape and lose weight.
