Soccer is a popular sport offered through community programs and schools for children of all ages, even as young as preschool. As the parent of a soccer player, you have the opportunity to help your son excel in the sport, but you should avoid becoming too involved. A parent who pushes his son too hard may cause him to lose interest or lack enjoyment when he plays soccer. Monitor your involvement to achieve a supportive balance.

Step 1

Enroll son with in a soccer league when he is ready to play on an organized team. Choose a team that matches his abilities and playing style. For example, don't sign him up for a competitive team if he only wants to play noncompetitive, recreational soccer.

Step 2

Volunteer as a coach if you are sure you can treat your son the same as you do his teammates. You may be able to serve as an assistant if you don't feel comfortable coaching the team. Serving as his coach gives you more time to teach him soccer moves and helps create a bonding experience.

Step 3

Practice soccer moves in the backyard or at a local park with a large open area. Help him use proper form, but avoid criticizing or yelling that could discourage him. Keep the practice laid back and enjoyable.

Step 4

Run around with your son without the soccer ball. Running helps condition your son, so he is better equipped to move up and down the soccer field.

Step 5

Tell your son you are proud of him no matter what happens on the field. Remind him of this before every game.

Step 6

Attend every game if possible, but avoid coaching your child from the stands if you aren't the team coach. Cheer for him without screaming out instructions.

Step 7

Congratulate your son after every game. Praise him for the positive aspects of his performance. If he brings up his mistakes, discuss what he can do to improve -- without placing too much emphasis on them.

Step 8

Practice specific skills at home with which your son had difficulty in games. For example, if he missed the goal several times, practice shooting into a goal in the backyard.
