PE class offers time for children and teens to work on their motor development skills and learn healthy exercise habits they can carry with them for life. Making PE fun rather than a chore can help young people appreciate the benefits of being physically active, as well as find activities they enjoy and can do outside of class. The options for fun things to do in PE class are endless and can be tweaked to suit different age levels.

Outdoor Games

Everyone enjoys being outside on a nice day, and you can make the most of beautiful weather by organizing outdoor games. Capture the Flag is a popular game among students that incorporates running exercise. For the game, split a field down the middle and give each team a flag to place in the back middle of their half of the field. One team can wear jerseys to distinguish them from the other team. Each team has a member guard their flag, and other team members try to "capture" the flag from their opponent. If a player gets tagged by an opposing team member on the opposition's turf, that player has to go to jail and can be freed only by a teammate who comes to the rescue. The game is over when one team gets the other's flag and makes it back to home turf.

Obstacle Course

Obstacle courses offer a fun way to get a cardio, flexibility and strength workout with the added bonus of mental stimulation and coordination challenges. Obstacle courses can be adjusted to meet the fitness level and ages of your students. A basic course may include tires on the ground to run through, a tunnel to crawl through, hurdles to jump over, monkey bars to traverse, and orange cones to sprint weave through. You can make the course competitive by timing students. For an added challenge, incorporate a rock climbing wall or a rope to climb up.

Field Day

Make PE class an extended day of exercise with a field day. Field days allow students to perform and compete in different events. Most field days are modeled after track meets, with a long distance race such as a mile run, sprint races, relays, and field events such as throwing and jumping. Field day can be fun for everyone if you allow students to choose the events they compete in, so they can all showcase their talents.

Tag

Tag is a classic game that can be played indoors or outdoors. Tag helps students get a good cardio workout and practice locomotor skills by running, dodging and chasing. Zoo tag adds a twist to regular tag by allowing students to use their imagination and choose an animal to be. Students can also choose to be a zookeeper. Zookeepers wear jerseys and try to capture animals. When a zookeeper tags someone, that student is sent to a penalty box and must perform a designated number of exercises such as crunches or pushups before being set free again.
