Picking the right surfboard is an individual choice and can vary based on your skill level, the waves you plan to ride and specific body measurements. Beginners typically find it easier to ride a longboard but even longboards come in many sizes. There are certain things to keep in mind when choosing the right longboard and once you get a general idea of the kind of board you need, you can begin to narrow your choices between brands and colors.

Step 1

Weigh yourself. Your weight is one of the main things that will help determine your longboard size. If you weigh 101 to 159 lbs., choose a longboard 9 feet to 9 feet, 2 inches; 160 to 210 lbs., 9 feet, 4 inches to 9 feet, 6 inches; and 211 lbs. or more, 10 feet or longer, according to IsleSurfboards.com.

Step 2

Check the possibility of getting a mini-longboard, which measures 7 feet to 8 feet, 6 inches, states IsleSurfboards.com. This kind of longboard is also good for beginner surfers but is more easily carried and transported.

Step 3

Ensure that the longboard you choose is about 1 foot taller than you, states Allaboutsurfboards.com. The taller you are, the longer your board should be, especially if you are a beginner. When you are a more advanced surfer, you may be able to choose a board closer to your height, because you will be able to better control the board.

Tips and Warnings

  • Ask surfboard store employees about the boards they use when surfing or ask surfers at the beach for their recommendations. See if you can try different length boards before buying so you can gauge which type suits you best.
  • Do not start surfing without proper guidance and instruction; without the right preparation, you may hurt yourself. Obtain the proper equipment to surf safely. Talk with other surfers to find out about everything you need.
