Strange as it may seem to many, the yoga mat is a Western invention. Traditionally, in places such as India, where yoga has been practiced for centuries, tightly woven cotton rugs were used as mats. Using a cotton rug rather than a yoga mat can help you feel a deeper connection to the roots of yoga, but it is important to adjust the rug to Western conditions in modern yoga studios.

Step 1

Purchase a rug designed specifically for yoga; these types of rugs are available at most stores that specialize in yoga products. Made of cotton, yoga-specific rugs are washable and cut to be the correct shape and size for use during a yoga practice.

Step 2

Buy a rug with a non-slip bottom; traditionally yoga was not performed in modern studios with finished wood floors, which tend to be slippery. Using a rug that does not contain a non-slip bottom can cause the rug to move while you are attempting standing poses, inversions or balancing poses, which can lead to falls and injuries.

Step 3

Place the rug over a sticky yoga mat if the bottom does not have a non-slip surface for safety.

Step 4

Wet the rug with water at the beginning of class since dry rugs can cause slipping. Yoga rugs work best when they are damp; if it takes a while for your sweat to penetrate the rug, or if you do not sweat that much during your yoga class, then wetting the rug can help to increase traction.

Step 5

Wash the rug frequently in cold water and allow it to hang dry. Repeated use of yoga rugs without washing can allow your sweat to fester, smell and cause bacteria. Washing your rug often will provide for a clean and comfortable yoga practice.

Step 6

Fold the rug into a cushioned square or rectangle to use for meditation. A benefit of using a yoga rug is that they provide a comfortable seat for use while meditating.
