Physical education is important for developing well-rounded students. Classroom gym games allow kids to learn, be active and release energy to maintain focus in core classes. Regular physical activity in school is an essential component in teaching students the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Throw to a Cone
Have each student pick a partner. One student will be the thrower, while the other will be the receiver. Place a cone on the floor to use as a target for the thrower. The receiver runs toward the cone choosing a straight, curved or zigzag pathway. He can also go as fast or as slow as he wants. As he is running he should be keeping his eye on his partner. The thrower throws the ball to his partner when he gets close to the cone. Once he catches it, he takes the spot of the thrower, and the thrower becomes the receiver.
Follow the Leader
You can do this activity either inside or outside. Pick a student to be the leader and everyone else will line up behind her. The leader can jog, walk, hop or jump. Encourage her to go under and over objects if she can do it safely. If outside, the leader can use the playground equipment. The students will follow her as she climbs stairs and goes down slides.
Dribbling Speedway
Give each student a basketball and have them scatter around a full-size basketball court. Place cones (speed bumps) randomly around the gym floor. Make four to five pit stop stations around the outside of the court. When you blow the whistle, the students should start dribbling their basketball. If their ball hits a cone, they must go to a pit stop station. In order for the student to get out of the pit stop and back onto the speedway, they need to perform a fitness exercise such as push-ups, sit-ups, or jumping jacks. The game ends when the whistle is blown.
Obstacle Course
Set up an obstacle course around the classroom using cones. Along the course, set up fitness stations. Each station has a certain activity the students have to perform such as dribbling a basketball, throwing a football, jumping rope, or passing a volleyball. The students must race through the cones riding on scooters. As they race through the course, they must stop at the stations and complete the activity before continuing.
