Bicycle components, from the frame, wheels and tires to the chain, brakes and derailleur, must be kept in proper working order to provide optimum performance. As you ride and encounter muddy riding conditions, your bicycle needs routine maintenance and cleaning to maintain that level of performance. Proper bicycle maintenance consists of routine checks after riding, as well as seasonal tune-ups.
General Cleaning
Cleaning your bicycle enables moving parts, such as the wheels, chain and brakes, to function properly. Start by rinsing the bicycle with a garden hose; increase the pressure of the hose to remove dirt and grease from the frame and the components. Use a brush, cloth or sponge to remove any remaining dirt. Clean your bicycle after every ride on a muddy trail and perform a routine monthly wash.
Tires and Wheels
Proper maintenance of wheels and tires ensures a level of high performance. Check tire pressure frequently and repair flat tires immediately. Check the pressure of the front and rear tires before every ride and visually inspect the wheel for any cuts or holes. Remove the wheels from the frame and turn the axle as you look for any bends or wobbles.
Chain and Derailleurs
The chain and derailleurs allow you to propel the bike and change gears to match riding conditions. Check the chain for wear on the rings and cassette before every ride; clean with a toothbrush and degreaser to remove any dirt or debris. Look for evenly spaced teeth on the crankset and ensure they match up to the links on the chain. Use a degreaser to clean the derailleurs, so that they can range back and forth smoothly as you change gears.
Brakes
Maintaining brakes allows you to stop or slow down to match riding conditions and keep you safe in traffic. Remove dirt and debris from the brake pads and routinely check for excessive wear; replace the pads when braking performance degrades. Failure to routinely replace brake pads reduces your ability to slow down and can cause damage to the rim. Always replace all four brake pads at the same time, so that the brakes function evenly.
