Inflammation of the iris, the colored part of your eye, is a condition known as iritis. Symptoms might include redness, eye pain, vision changes and light sensitivity. Treatment will often resolve symptoms, but some people experience periodic flare-ups. If you experience frequent episodes of iritis, you might need to talk to your doctor about the ways you can help prevent iritis, such as choosing the right foods to help boost your immune system.


Iritis can occur from an eye infection, injury or an underlying medical condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis. You might also have an increased risk of iritis if you take certain medications. If you have a poorly functioning immune system, this can put you at a greater risk for experiencing iritis.

Immune System

Diet will not cure or treat iritis, but eating a variety of healthy foods might help improve your immune system and prevent the condition. You can do this by increasing your intake of antioxidant nutrients such as vitamins A, C and E, and lutein, along with other antioxidants. Your doctor can help you evaluate your eating plan to ensure you have the right intake of all the nutrients your body needs each day. If you do not consume the recommended amount of nutrients daily, either through your diet or supplements, this could result in a compromised immune system.

Your doctor can help you create a food plan that will provide you with the nutrients you need to stay healthy and keep your immune system strong. Begin by choosing a variety of dark green and other vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, corn and carrots to provide a healthy variety of nutrients. Fruits such as strawberries, cantaloupe, bananas and oranges also offer healthy choices for many different vitamins and minerals.

Nuts and seeds, such as almonds and sunflower seeds, can provide you with vitamin E and other nutrients, and lean proteins such as skinless chicken breast, seafood and lean cuts of beef will also help provide you with the nutrition you need to keep up your immune system. Round off a balanced diet by choosing dairy products such as skim milk and low-fat yogurt, and select healthy grains such as brown rice and whole wheat pasta.


If you have iritis, do not rely on dietary changes to resolve or treat your condition. Contact your doctor for an evaluation. You might need steroid or antibiotic eye drops to relieve inflammation and treat the cause of the condition. To relieve pain, your doctor might recommend keeping your pupils dilated until the inflammation dissipates.
