Adverse Effects of Melatonin

If insomnia is a problem for you, melatonin is a supplement you may consider taking to help your body rediscover the natural circadian rhythm it was meant to enjoy. Melatonin can be purchased in almost every grocery and drug store. It is a synthetic form of the hormone naturally made in your brain. Melatonin does have some adverse effects, and you should discuss melatonin with your doctor prior to taking it. If you take any prescription medications, it is especially important that you talk to your doctor prior to adding melatonin supplements to your regimen to avoid dangerous side effects.

Neurological

Although melatonin is often taken to help cause sleep, it may cause you to feel fatigued or excessively sleepy, especially if taken at the wrong time of day, or if taken in large doses. The Mayo Clinic notes that the recommended dose of melatonin for most people is 5 mg per day. Melatonin may also cause you to feel dizzy and has been known to cause headaches. The supplement may also cause you to feel disoriented or confused.

Dreams and Sleep Walking

An unusual adverse effect of melatonin is that it may cause you to have very wild or vivid dreams. Nightmares are also possible while taking the supplement. The exact cause of the effects related to taking melatonin is unknown, and it can be very disturbing for some individuals. Sleep walking may also occur, creating safety concerns, as well.

Effects on Diseases

If you have certain underlying medical conditions, taking melatonin may make them worse. If you have high blood pressure, be careful taking melatonin, because it may make your blood pressure rise. Diabetics should also be careful because melatonin has been known to increase blood sugar. Individuals with seizure disorders and depression may experience a worsening of symptoms while taking the supplement.

Allergic Reactions

It is possible to have a serious allergic reaction to melatonin supplements. Drugs.com explains that you should contact your doctor or emergency personnel immediately if you experience shortness of breath, confusion, difficulty breathing, chest tightness or facial swelling. Allergic reactions of this severity are rare, but should be treated immediately.

Considerations

If melatonin causes any of these adverse effects, or if you are concerned about any of them prior to taking the supplement, do not hesitate to speak with your doctor. Other alternatives exist to help with insomnia and the other conditions treated by melatonin. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should not use melatonin supplements.
