Lacrosse is a team sport that was created by American Indians. It distinguishes itself from other stick ball games with the use of a unique netted stick, used to catch, carry and throw the ball. In men's lacrosse, there are three different types of sticks: short, long and goalie sticks. These sticks all must meet specific regulations as set forth by lacrosse's governing body.
Governing Body
U.S. Lacrosse is the governing body for both men's and women's lacrosse in the United States. The organization creates the rules for the game at the youth and adult level, including all regulations regarding the lacrosse stick. Most lacrosse leagues in the country follow these guidelines.
Structure
A lacrosse stick is composed of two main parts: the shaft and the head. The shaft is a long, hollow handle, usually made of aluminum or titanium, where a player holds the stick. The head is attached to the top of the stick. It is roughly triangular in shape, wider at the top and narrower at the bottom where it connects to the shaft. The head is laced with strings or mesh tied to it to form a pocket, where it holds the ball when a player has possession.
Short Sticks
Short sticks are used by attackers and some midfielders. Short sticks are easier to control and allow attackers to use them to shoot on the goal. These sticks must be between 40 and 42 inches long, including both the shaft and head. The length of the head, from the outside edge to where it is connected to the shaft, must be at least 10 inches. The shaft cannot be more than 3.5 inches in circumference. The head of the shaft can be between 6.5 and 10 inches at its widest point.
Long Sticks
Defenders and certain midfielders use long sticks. These sticks allow defenders to knock the ball away from their opponents. Teams are allowed a maximum of four players using long sticks at one time, not including the goalie. Rules state that long sticks be between 52 and 72 inches long. The other dimensional requirements are the same as a short stick including shaft circumference and the length and width of the stick head.
Goalie Sticks
Only players designated as goalies can use goalie sticks. A goalie stick, specifically the head of the stick, has specific dimensions. The length of stick must be between 40 and 72 inches, meaning goalies can use either short or long sticks. Goalie sticks must be between 10 and 12 inches wide. This wide head provides a goalie with a better chance at stopping his opponent's shots.
