Simponi was approved in April of 2009 for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, active psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, according to Drugs.com. Simponi is the first patient-administered therapy option. The medication reduces inflammation caused by specific diseases. As with any medication, Simponi has the potential for side effects.
Reactivation of Hepatitis B Virus
Individuals who carry the hepatitis B virus may experience a reactivation of the infection with the use of Simponi. Side effects of this infection, as reported by Drugs.com, include fatigue, jaundice, vomiting, muscle aches, darkened urine, clay-colored stools, fever, chills, stomach discomfort or skin rash. Hepatitis B infection can be fatal, warns Drugs.com.
Common Side Effects
RxList.com reports that the most common side effects include respiratory tract infection and inflammation of the pharynx, occurring in about 7 and 6 percent of patients. Other common effects may include discomfort at the injection site. These effects, as reported by Drugs.com, include pain, tenderness, irritation, swelling, redness, bruising and bleeding.
Other Complications
Drugs.com reports that some individuals may experience an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer, heart failure, nervous system problems, liver problems, reduced blood counts and/or lupus-like symptoms. The symptoms associated with these complications include new or worsening heart irregularities, shortness of breath, swelling of the lower legs or feet, vision changes, weakness in the arms or legs, numbing or tingling in any part of the body, extreme fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes, reduced appetite, vomiting, pain on the right side of the stomach, bruising, bleeding easily, paleness, sensitivity to the sun and/or new joint or muscle pain.
Drugs.com also warns users to report any signs of allergy to their doctors. These symptoms may include hives, itching, swelling of the face, swelling of the mouth and trouble breathing.
